The American Heart Association says people with high blood pressure should limit their sodium intake to 1,500 milligrams per day. This is less than the 2,300 milligrams per day recommended for the general population. Sodium can worsen high blood pressure because it causes the body to retain fluid.

Every Indian should consume 8 grams of salt

According to a study, on an average, every Indian person consumes 8 grams of salt per day, while the daily salt intake prescribed by health experts is only 5 grams. This study has been published in the prestigious journal ‘Nature Portfolio’. For this study, a sample of 3000 adults was taken for the survey under the National Non-Communicable Disease Monitoring Survey (NNMS). In this survey, the researchers examined the level of sodium in the urine of the participants, as sodium is the main component of salt.

High blood pressure can cause high

Remember, salt contains sodium which can increase our blood pressure. Excess sodium increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore, do not eat more than the amount of salt prescribed by doctors. We need to eat only 5 grams of salt daily. Salt contains sodium which is necessary for our nerves and muscles. But if we eat too much salt, it can increase blood pressure.

It can also cause heart attack and stroke. Low-sodium salt, which is high in potassium, is fine for healthy people. But people with diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease should avoid it. Dr Prashant Mathur, director of ICMR-National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research, who led the study, told TOI that if we reduce the amount of sodium in our daily diet by at least 1.2 grams, then up to 50% of those who have to take medicines for blood pressure can benefit from it.
